Wanna Kicks AR shoes try on. Case Study

WANNA Kicks is the sneaker try on app, where you can discover fresh drops and classic sneakers with the help of augmented reality (AR).

My contribution

• Discovery and research

• App design and evolution

• Generating ideas

• Hypothesis testing
• Interactive prototypes
• Visual system and components library
• Guidelines for development

Primary goals and objectives

• Increase avg time
• Increase MAU, DAU

• Returning users metric

• Introduce new ways to interact with the content

Platform

• iOS
• android

✅ Results

• Increased avg time per user per week by 61%
• MAU iOS increased by 95.35%
• Av DAU iOS increased by 21.52%
• Returning users increased 6.1K > 61.2K

Problem Statement

The initial version of the app featured only a try-on screen. Users would quickly try on a few sneakers, leave the app, and rarely return.

Solving this issue was projected to increase avg time by 50% and increase returning users by 10 times.

Our research phase included

• In-depth user interviews
• Persona method, JTBD
• Competitive analysis of leading AR/Fashion apps (Snapchat, Goat, etc.)

Key findings

• 60% of users preferred a sneaker catalog over just a feed
• The majority of users wanted the ability to save their favorite sneakers to a wishlist and purchase them
• 8 out of 10 users took photos and expressed a desire for a quick way to share them with friends
• Users emphasized the importance of accurate sizing suggestions based on their virtual try-ons to reduce potential returns
• 70% of users wanted to see detailed information about the brand and sneakers

Ideation

• 5-day design sprint with all 5 team-members
• Miro-board with prioritization matrix of Effort vs. Impact and ideas
• Generated 50+ rough ideas

The ideation phase helped identify key ideas for the next steps

• Adding a Discover section
• Introducing a full-fledged catalog with filters and search functionality
• Creating a user profile with a favorites list
• Developing a comprehensive product page with detailed information and a "Buy Now" button
• Enabling quick photo sharing to social media

Prototyping

Protopie and Usertesting.com were used as the main tools for prototyping and testing ideas with users. Respondents for the tests were selected based on the user personas created.

Conducted unmoderated interviews, then reviewed each user's responses, using them to validate ideas. If an idea didn’t pass validation on the first attempt, it was sent for refinement and retested.

The main pain point during prototype testing was that we had to show the virtual try-on through pre-recorded videos and explain how the virtual try-on worked.

Design Process

I worked on all the screens and sections of the app, updated the visual language, created a comprehensive UI kit, and provided detailed specifications to the development team.

Try-On Screen

The entire screen was also dedicated to the try-on feature, with a tab bar added for sections Discover and Catalog, a user profile with wishlist and additional info, an Updates section, and a Like button to add sneakers to the wishlist.

Navigation

The tab bar features a smooth and visually pleasing transition effect when switching between sections.

Discover

The section includes highlighted pre-selected sneakers and curated collections.

I worked on and tested numerous concepts and ideas to make the app more social and improve user retention metrics. Some of the ideas included:
• Adding stories showcasing virtual try-ons
• A drop calendar featuring newly released sneakers with virtual try-on options
• Articles from brands and sneakerheads
• Various ways to interact with virtual try-on content

Catalog

The catalog includes a wide selection of brands, user-friendly filters, and a straightforward search feature.

Onboarding

The onboarding briefly explains the app's purpose through a cool 3D visuals. I worked on visuals from concept to execution using Cinema 4D and Arnold Render.

✅ All key metrics have been improved. For instance:

• Increased avg time per user per week by 61%
• MAU iOS increased by 95.35%
• Av DAU iOS increased by 21.52%
• Returning users increased 6.1K > 61.2k

Huge thanks to the team for their support and valuable feedback.
